The meaning of Istikhara is: Asking for good, that is: praying to Allah for good and goodness in one's affairs, the main thing after Istikhara is the tendency of the heart, it is not necessary to see a dream in it, towards which the heart is inclined, that is it.

استخارہ کا مسنون طریقہ یہ ہے کہ دن رات میں کسی بھی وقت بشرطیکہ وہ نفل کی ادائیگی کا مکروہ وقت نہ ہو دو رکعت نفل استخارہ کی نیت سے پڑھیں،نیت یہ کرے کہ میرے سامنے یہ معاملہ یا مسئلہ ہے ، اس میں جو راستہ میرے حق میں بہتر ہو ، اللہ تعالی اس کا فیصلہ فرمادیں ۔ سلام پھیر کر نماز کے بعد استخارہ کی مسنون دعا مانگیں جو حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے تلقین فرمائی ہے، استخارہ کی مسنون دعا یہ ہے
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ،
فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلا أَقْدِرُ وَتَعْلَمُ وَلا أَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتَ عَلامُ الْغُيُوبِ اللَّهُمَّ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ هَذَا الأَمْرَ ثُمَّ تُسَمِّيهِ بِعَيْنِهِ خَيْرًا لِي فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ قَالَ أَوْ فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ اللَّهُمَّ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي أَوْ قَالَ فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ
فَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ واصرفه عني وَاقْدُرْ لِي الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ
ثُمَّ رَضِّنِي بِهِ
ترجمہ:اے اللہ ميں ميں تيرے علم كى مدد سے خير مانگتا ہوں اور تجھ سے ہى تيرى قدرت كے ذريعہ
قدرت طلب كرتا ہوں اور ميں تجھ سے تيرا فضل عظيم مانگتا ہوں، يقينا تو ہر چيز پر قادر ہے اور ميں ( كسى چيز پر ) قادر نہيں، تو جانتا ہے اور ميں نہيں جانتا اور تو تمام غيبوں كا علم ركھنے والا ہے، الہى اگر تو جانتا ہے كہ يہ كام ( جس كا ميں ارادہ ركھتا ہوں ) ميرے ليے ميرے دين اور ميرى زندگى اور ميرے انجام كار كے لحاظ سے بہتر ہے تو اسے ميرے مقدر ميں كر اور آسان كر دے، پھر اس ميں ميرے ليے بركت عطا فرما اور اگر تيرے علم ميں يہ كام ميرے ليے اور ميرے دين اور ميرى زندگى اور ميرے انجام كار كے لحاظ سے برا ہے تو اس كام كو مجھ سے اور مجھے اس سے پھير دے اور ميرے ليے بھلائى مہيا كر جہاں بھى ہو، پھر مجھے اس كے ساتھ راضى كردے .
O Allah! I seek goodness from Your Knowledge and with Your Power (and Might) I seek strength, and I ask from You Your Great Blessings, because You have the Power and I do not have the power. You Know everything and I do not know, and You have knowledge of the unseen. Oh Allah! If in Your Knowledge this action (which I intend to do) is better for my religion and faith, for my life and end [death], for here [in this world] and the hereafter then make it destined for me and make it easy for me and then add blessings in it, for me. O Allah! In Your Knowledge if this action is bad for me, bad for my religion and faith, for my life and end [death], for here [in this world] and the hereafter then turn it away from me and turn me away from it and whatever is better for me, ordain [destine] that for me and then make me satisfied with it.
