The University of Peshawar, commonly known as Peshawar University or UoP, is a public research university situated in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Founded in 1950, the university is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the province and is recognized as one of the highest-rated universities in the country.
The University of Peshawar offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, and currently has approximately 14,000 enrolled students. The university has six academic faculties and forty postgraduate departments, along with two centers of excellence. The campus is spread over 1,045 acres (4 km2) and is known for its research in social, medical, and natural sciences. The university has eight research centers located within its campus.
The university was founded as an expansion of Islamia College, and in its inaugural year, had an enrollment of 129 students, of whom only one was a woman. The founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, visited the college in 1928 and held it in high regard, referring to it as "my college." He adopted it as one of the three heirs to his fortune, along with Aligarh University and Sindh Madrassa, his own school in 1939. For Jinnah, the university was a gift to the students of the province, recognizing their contributions to the making of Pakistan. The Pashtuns played a significant role in capturing Azad Kashmir during the independence struggle.
The University of Peshawar has six academic faculties, including the Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Islamic and Oriental Studies, Faculty of Management and Information Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, and Faculty of Social Sciences. Each faculty offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various disciplines.
In addition to its academic faculties, the university also has eight research centers, including the Centre of Biotechnology and Microbiology, Centre of Excellence in Geology, Centre of Excellence in Physical Chemistry, Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management, Centre for Integrative Mountain Development, Centre for Plant Biodiversity, Centre for Solid State Physics, and the Centre for Women’s Studies and Gender Research. These centers are known for their significant research contributions in various fields, including natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
The University of Peshawar is a recognized university by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, and it awards both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The National Center of Excellence in Geology (NCEG) is an esteemed institution of higher learning and research in the field of Geo-sciences. It is a part of the University of Peshawar (UoP) and was established in 1974 under an act of parliament. The founding director of the center was Dr. R.A. Khan Tahirkheli, and since then, the center has been led by several esteemed personalities. After Dr. Tahirkheli's retirement, Dr. M. Qasim Jan succeeded him in 1988, followed by Prof. Dr. Syed Hamidullah in January 2001. In 2002, Dr. M. Asif Khan took over as the director, but Dr. Syed Hamidullah was appointed again in 2003 after the untimely demise of Dr. Hamidullah in an air crash. Currently, Dr. M. Asif Khan is the director of the center.
The National Center of Excellence in Geology offers state-of-the-art facilities for research and education in Geo-sciences. The center has well-equipped laboratories and computer facilities, including a geological museum, mineralogy and petrology laboratory, sedimentology and stratigraphy laboratory, and geophysics and remote sensing laboratory. Moreover, the center offers a wide range of academic programs, including M.Phil and Ph.D. in various fields of Geo-sciences.
The NCEG is committed to research, and its faculty and students have produced remarkable contributions in the field of Geo-sciences, including mineral exploration, earthquake prediction, and geological mapping. The center has successfully completed several research projects, funded by national and international organizations, including the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The National Center of Excellence in Geology has established collaborations and partnerships with national and international institutions, including the Geological Survey of Pakistan, Pakistan Petroleum Limited, and the International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (INTAS). These partnerships have resulted in fruitful research collaborations, student and faculty exchanges, and joint research projects. The NCEG has also organized several international and national conferences and workshops, providing a platform for researchers to share their research findings and ideas.
The University of Peshawar has streamlined its admission process and established the Directorate of Admissions in 2001 to provide students seeking admission in various courses a one-window operation. The directorate is responsible for all matters concerning the admission procedures of all Undergraduate, Postgraduate levels, and Higher Studies (M.Phil./ Ph.D.). The Directorate is headed by a Director, who is assisted by a Deputy Registrar and a team of professional staff responsible for managing publications of the University prospectus for Undergraduate, Postgraduate level, and Higher Studies.
The Directorate of Admissions has several key functions, which include finalizing admission schedules, calendars, and giving them wide publicity. It is also responsible for delivering admissions-related services to all constituencies both in the public and private sectors. The Directorate collects, scrutinizes, and processes application forms received for admissions to various levels, prepares merit lists according to the University admission criteria, and displays them in the respective departments/colleges/centers. It also coordinates with concerned University departments in matters relating to admissions and ensures compliance with admission standards, policies, and regulations.
Moreover, the Directorate is also responsible for looking after the M.Phil./Ph.D. programs being run by the University and is actively engaged in dealing with M.Phil./Ph.D. cases of more than 30 Departments and Centres of Excellence, among others. The Directorate also monitors other designated management responsibilities such as migration, scholarships, equivalence of academic credentials/programs, and attendance rules.
To cater to the various aspects of admission and related functions, the Directorate of Admissions is divided into four sections. The Admissions Information Management System (AMIS) section is responsible for managing Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs. The MPhil./PhD. section, located in Room No. 105, oversees MPhil./PhD. programs. The Affiliated Colleges section, located in Room No. 102, is responsible for admissions related to affiliated colleges. The Scholarship Section manages scholarships related to admissions.
Soon after the declaration of Intermediate results by the BISE Peshawar, the admission process commences by wide publicity in print & electronic media. The prospectus along with application/ admission form is made available online.
It is notified for the information of all concerned that following fee will be charged from the students admitted in the session 2021-22 in various academic programs. Further, the same will be charged from the said students till the completion of their BS academic programmes:
