The Benazir Income Support Programme was established in 2008 by Yousaf Raza Gillani on the advice of President Asif Ali Zardari. The name of the program is inspired by the woman perceived as a symbol of courage, former Prime Minister and wife of Mr. Asif Ali Zardari President, Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in 2007.
BISP is a country-wide, Pakistan’s federal unconditional cash transfer poverty reduction program. It was the single largest social safety program in the country with $ 1. In 2016, the figure distributed per beneficiary was 90 billion ($900 million), and the number of beneficiaries from this program is 5.4 million.
